Sweet Nothings

Sweet Nothings
Sarah Cosby
About the piece:
Muscular power, rhythmic circular motion, rapid-fire reaction were the phrases running through my mind when creating ‘Sweet Nothings.” Electric blue in the empty shadow shapes channels the focus on the soft or hard edges of the shadow describing the turning of form. The juxtaposition of the ultramarine shadows against the warm tones act as a liberator so that the emphasis is on the lions’ gesture and weight to direct dynamic motion in the composition. Lions glow in the evening light and the lighter handling of the fur’s warm tones with naturalistic details in directional strokes of watercolour pencil anchor the lions in the realm of plausible realism. Watercolour’s vibrancy when applied thinly and the inherent beauty of colour mixing through layered dry glazes gives energy apt to the subject.
