About the piece:
Clare is a self-taught wildlife artist specialising in pastels. ‘In the Shadows’ was drawn during the chaos of the first lockdown, and Clare therefore wanted to capture a moment of stillness. Spider monkeys are commonly very vocal creatures, with a variety of calls which can often make them vulnerable to predators. Amongst all this noise this piece has managed to capture a moment of quiet. Clare enjoys capturing the emotion and personality of her subjects. Therefore, the background has been kept plain to ensure that the creature is the focal point, with a detailed focus on the light capturing the eye so that the personality of the animal is conveyed.
