About the piece:
Kimberley James, a wildlife artist based in Wales, always had a love for animals and nature. She endeavours to capture the fine details of the animal but in a way that can also capture their expressions. She started out using pastels and coloured pencils in 2015 but discovered her burning passion for pyrography in 2019. The mixture of the natural grain of the wood and any imperfections that come with lumber adds another dimension to the artwork, making each piece unique and giving it further character. This wood burning shows a northern white rhino beginning to fade away into dust and darkness, much like the species itself. The position of the rhino is captured at the very brink of destruction. Has it already fallen or is it still trying to get back up? Sadly, the northern white rhino is functionally extinct, with only two female rhinos remaining in the entire world. However, scientists are working to prevent the species becoming fully extinct. We can only hope that they can still be saved from fading away completely.
