Painted on a 70-year old map, my artwork captures the mountain bongo’s ability to blend into its surroundings, with poaching and deforestation in the Aberdare Range and Mt. Kenya playing a key factor in its demise. However, conservation efforts, successful breeding programmes and increasing global awareness offer hope for its survival.

MEDIUM: Pencil and pastel on paper

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Kenyan wildlife artist, Peter Blackwell, has been painting professionally for over four decades. He is currently focusing on one of a kind works using vintage and antique maps as the foundation to his pieces to help tell a story and take the viewer on a unique safari or journey. Creases, wrinkles and personal notations on the maps all add to the distinctive flavour of each piece, whilst creating works of art on the maps creates challenges so the map and the artwork complement each other and each play a part in the story to be told.
