My sculpture is based on a real orangutan called Leuser who was shot 62 times in the face and groin and left permanently blind for simply walking into a palm oil plantation. I sculpted Long Arm at life size, not just to represent him, but to tell his story and make people feel something real, something that stays with them after they walk away. This sculpture has been displayed in a number of spaces, engaging people in unexpected places. He invites connection and conversation about our relationship with the natural world. He’s also the subject of a documentary I’m producing, showing how art can go beyond the gallery and into real-life impact.

MEDIUM: Cold cast bronze

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Casey Nadine Banwell is an internationally acclaimed, eight-time award-winning sculptor who transitioned from a decade in the film industry to creating powerful wildlife conservation art. Her sculptures have raised funds for orangutan and pangolin rescue programmes and directly funded the purchase of 46 acres of Sumatran rainforest. In 2022, her pangolin bronze ‘Protection’ was unveiled at both 10 Downing Street and the State House in Nairobi. Exhibiting internationally, including at Mall Galleries, OXO Tower, and Vancouver’s VanDusen Gardens, Casey uses her art to inspire change and protect the wild creatures that continue to inspire her.
