My painting shows an Amur leopard lounging on a tree branch, partly bathed in the long shadows of early evening. In the background, golden clouds reflect sunlight. The background shows distress, symbolising the duality of the leopard’s fight against extinction and its exalted status. Although endangered, its population has stabilised, bringing future hope.
MEDIUM: Oil and gold leaf on canvas
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Tom Symonds is a Bristol-based painter exploring psychological and emotional states through symbolic animal imagery. His works merge East Asian influences with ecological concerns, drawing from natural history, dream logic, and personal mythology. Tom’s current series, Aspects in Transition, uses gold leaf and diffracted wildlife forms to explore transformation, mourning, and rebirth. A finalist in Wildlife Artist of the Year and other national exhibitions, his work invites reflection on the boundary between myth and reality, emotional states and identity.
