Through this subtle yet striking blind embossing I wanted to show our inextricable link to nature, wherever we live. It echoes lung bronchioles, tree branches and easily-overlooked urban plants. This inkless piece quietly invites us to stop and think how nature enables us to not just breathe, but to really stop… and breathe.

MEDIUM: Blind embossing on cotton paper

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Kate Alger is a multi-disciplinary analogue artist-printmaker and educator, her work being made entirely by hand. Kate’s recent work explores our relationship with the environment, through blind embossings which invite the viewer to notice overlooked urban plants, painterly monotypes which seek to evoke the emotion of a place or character of an animal, coffee-lift etchings and collagraphs which celebrate woodland views familiar to Kate, and detailed hand-coloured pen drawings which feature flora and fauna from a rare habitat close to Kate’s home. She exhibits regularly, her work is held in private collections and has been featured in specialist press.
