The puffin is classified as a critically endangered species by the British Trust for Ornithology. My artwork is challenging the viewer to understand that we need to make a ‘contract’ with these species in order to preserve them and ensure they do not become extinct. This piece is of a hand-embroidered puffin, stitched directly onto a c. 1850 contract on indenture parchment.
MEDIUM: Hand embroidery on vintage parchment
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Angela Knapp is an artist known for her detailed hand stitched embroideries of once common but now endangered birds. After research, the birds are created using fabric, paint, and many layers of thread. Once complete, they are then stitched onto vintage parchment or pages of books. Angela captures the essence and fragility of her subjects, using art in a unique and powerful way, inviting viewers into the narratives and fragility of these birds. Will these birds only be visible in a reference book in years to come and when will we have a contract with nature to ensure their survival?
