BanTigerTrade has reached 100,000 supporters!

TigerTime, the global campaign for the conservation of wild tigers run by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has reached the milestone of 100,000 signatures on its petition to ban the trade in tiger parts from any source www.bantigertrade.com.

The petition, launched in September 2011, has gathered huge momentum due to passionate supporters and strong celebrity endorsement. Actress and animal lover, Joanna Lumley, who has supported the campaign from the start, expressed her horror about the tiger trade in a letter to The Times while comedian Ricky Gervais, TV presenter Stephen Fry and author Neil Gaiman have urged their combined twitter followers of 7.5 million to get behind TigerTime and sign the petition.

Former model turned international singer, Samantha Fox, who has helped lead the TigerTime campaign,  stated “I’m grateful to all the celebrities and to the thousands of people across the world who are supporting our efforts.” Sam’s passionate plea on the BBC Daily Politics show led to a personal meeting with Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne who promised to make ‘a new appeal to the Chinese Government’ to consider how the tiger could be better protected and preserved.

“Reaching 100,000 signatures is an amazing milestone,” says wildlife artist and conservationist David Shepherd CBE, who launched TigerTime on his 80th birthday in April 2011. “It demonstrates the level of passion, concern and commitment that people all around the world have for the desperate plight of the tiger. It’s fantastic to know that there are so many people who care.”

“The public support for TigerTime has been incredible, we simply could not have reached 100,000 this quickly without the help of our ‘TigerTime family’,” adds TigerTime campaign executive, Chantelle Henderson. “But the fight is far from over. We still need to gain more support to show the governments of the world that they need to act now to save the wild tiger from extinction.”
