DSWF hosts two major annual competitions that celebrate our roots in the art world. We also regularly collaborate with our partner artists and ambassadors on new projects that creatively champion art and artistry through competition.
Known as the “Oscars” of wildlife art, Wildlife Artist of the Year celebrates the art of conservation and attracts entries from all over the world. Each year, a stunning selection of shortlisted works then make it into the spotlight of our accompanying Wildlife Artist of the Year exhibition.
Wildlife Artist of the Year is open to amateurs and professionals alike, aged 15 years and over. Artists aged between 15-19 years at the closing date are automatically entered into our ‘Youth Exclusive’ category. But younger artists may be interested in our Global Canvas competition – please see below.
One of the most renowned competitions of its kind, Wildlife Artist of the Year has firmly stamped its place in the art world and calendar based on the calibre of its entries. And the rewards are just as high as the stakes, with the overall winner eligible for a prize of £10,000 – split equally between the artist and a DSWF project of their choice.
There are eight categories to choose from, covering the broad spectrums of the art and conservation worlds.
50% of the proceeds and entry income directly supports the vital work of DSWF and our conservation partners.
Global Canvas is our celebrated annual international contest for young, aspiring artists. The competition was a personal project and labour of love for our founder, the renowned artist and conservationist, David Shepherd. His playful nature always endeared him to children and his genuine enthusiasm for young artistry saw Global Canvas launched in 2004. The competition has grown in reach and popularity ever since, with entries often spanning 50 countries or more.
Each year, the genuine passion, pride, and concern shown by young people for our wild world is put on display and in the spotlight. Equipping the next generation of wildlife warriors with a platform to express themselves is a significant aspect of Global Canvas.
