World Animal Day

World Animal Day falls on October 4, 2025. Find out more here about the 2025 theme and the work DSWF does to protect endangered species in the wild.

World Animal Day 2025

World Animal Day is primarily focused on animal welfare. Whilst DSWF’s focus is on fighting wildlife crime, we support the principles of making the world a better place for all animals, and how each of us can make a difference.

What is World Animal Day?

We know there’s lots of world animal days and awareness days in the calendar. But this is the World Animal Day.

World Animal Day is about putting the plight of animals first and improving animal welfare standards on a global level. It’s also a day of celebration for all animal lovers. And if you’re wondering why it takes place on October 4th each year, it’s because that date marks the feast day of St Francis of Assisi – the patron saint of animals!

The Importance of Wildlife Conservation

Whilst DSWF isn’t a welfare organisation, we are very much all about making the world a better place – by protecting endangered species in their natural habitat. By protecting these animals and the ecosystems they live in, DSWF is strengthening the biodiversity in these regions, which supports the health of our planet and the life that depends on it.

Our eight core species are threatened by habitat loss from human encroachment and climate change. They are also targeted by poachers for the illegal wildlife and bushmeat trades.

Most of our species are also what are known as keystone species – meaning they have a significant impact on their surrounding environment. Elephants and rhinos are ecosystem engineers, making space for new growth. Carnivores like our big cats and painted dogs keep prey populations healthy and prevent them from negatively affecting the limited resources of their habitats. Even pangolins do their part in eating thousands of insects a day and keeping them under control!

How David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Protects Animals

DSWF has led the fight against wildlife crime for over 40 years, protecting endangered species in their natural habitats. Our support and funding drives anti-poaching initiatives, keeping vulnerable populations of animals safe from illegal hunting. Our community projects enable and empower local people to turn away from the illegal wildlife trade to pursue independent livelihoods. And our education programmes focus on reducing demand for species targeted for both bushmeat and traditional medicine.

And all the while, we pursue the highest levels of legal change and protection on the international political stage to end the illegal trades and practices that threaten so many species. We’ve provided an unwavering voice for wildlife conservation from grassroots to the world stage, since 1984.
