This portrait captures the unflinching gaze of a melanistic jaguar, confronting the viewer through a direct stare with a quiet intensity that dissolves distance and demands recognition. Rendered through charcoal, deep shadows and light reveal hidden patterns within its black coat, a reminder that even in the darkness there is a depth and intricacy. The presence of big cats in the wild is fragile and increasingly threatened. Cole’s work pays homage and calls for their protection.

Artist biography Cole is primarily a charcoal fine artist whose work has emerged from a lifelong connection to wildlife. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, his early experiences in Hwange National Park shaped both his perspective and practice and later grounded his work in appreciation and respect for the natural world. Working most commonly in monochrome, Cole utilises his colour blindness to focus on tone, form, and presence, stripping back distraction to reveal the essence of his subjects.
