Impala Shade

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
On hot days it’s common to see small groups of impalas gathering in the shade beneath thorny acacias. Alison had often sketched their slim silhouettes but had never painted them, until now. The sharp horns of the male echo the spiky branches, while warm light reflects on the group’s stomachs and legs. Dozens of tiny impala hoofprints show that this is one of their favourite haunts.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alison Nicholls is an artist inspired by Africa. She lived in Botswana and Zimbabwe for several years and returns regularly to sketch and paint. She is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists; a member of the Sketch For Survival jurying panel; and was a finalist in the 2025 “Splash – Best of Watercolour” international competition. She makes a donation to African conservation from every sale of her art, and leads art safaris in Africa for Africa Geographic.
