ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In ”Upepo” (“breeze” in Swahili), a lion sits still, his gaze fixed on something beyond the frame. There is no drama or chase, only stillness and a quiet sense of presence. Inspired by often-overlooked moments in wildlife observation, this piece captures the anticipation of watching and waiting, where everything is felt, and curiosity invites the viewer to complete the story beyond what is seen.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Annick Mitchell is a Kenyan-born, self-directed artist whose work celebrates the individuality of animals. After leaving a successful career in wildlife tourism in 2019, she first gained recognition through commissioned pet portraits. Drawing on a lifetime spent exploring Kenya’s landscapes and observing its animals, she creates expressive original works that reveal each subject’s spirit, presence, and emotional depth. Rather than focusing on animals as symbols of the wild, she portrays them as individuals with distinct character and emotional resonance.
