ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Together We Stand” is inspired by a month Jane spent observing and drawing wild horses during her USA artist residency. It reflects the quiet strength and unity found within the herd, with the lead mare subtly anchoring and guiding the group. Depicting horses gathered in close presence, the work speaks to resilience, protection, and shared instinct, where individual forms merge into collective energy. The painting explores connection, belonging, and the essential role of leadership in survival and harmony in nature.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jane Johansson is a British artist whose practice centres on painting horses as a way of exploring instinct, emotion and connection to the natural world. She works intuitively using expressive mark-making and layered paint to capture movement and presence. Her work is informed by time spent with wild horses in natural landscapes, reflecting themes of freedom and belonging. Johansson is currently developing a body of work informed by her artist in residence at Return to Freedom Wild Horse Conservation, USA.
