Gary Hodges is the UK’s best selling and most collectable pencil artist. He absolutely adores elephants; to be around, to observe their family life, to hear their deep rumblings… and to draw.
In 1990, he visited Daphne Sheldrick’s orphanage in Kenya and immediately fell in love with the place and the obvious compassion everyone felt towards the young elephants in their care.
In 1991, ‘The Orphans’ drawing was born. With admiration, he offered Dame Daphne a print of the completed artwork. She enthused
“His drawing of two of our orphaned elephants, hangs in my house, and is one of my most treasured possessions. To me it is the work of a Master, not only accurate in every detail, but subtly portraying the character of the animals with deep sensitivity.”
In the year 2000, Gary revisited the orphanage for two weeks. This time with his friend, actor Rula Lenska and a film crew, to make the documentary ‘Wild at Art’ which raised money for the trust.
Recently, the kind owner of the original drawing of ‘The Orphans’ donated it back to the artist to raise money for conservation, in memory of Graham Frazer. Seizing the opportunity, Gary decided to further raise funds by embellishing the drawing with many thousands of carefully placed pencil strokes, making it more dynamic with richer tones and even more detail.
“Gary’s embellished baby elephants are magnificent as is he! Every day, I look at my orphans print with pride, and remember them in real life.” RULA LENSKA
He has published the updated drawing as a low edition, large format print with all profits going to elephant conservation. The retitled picture ‘The Power of Love’ has already raised over £13,000 for elephant conservation.
Gary is excited to offer a number of these special prints to loyal supporters of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation with 100% of profits going straight to DSWF to assist their ground-breaking work.
