ABOUT THE ARTWORK
A flying fox, or fruit bat, drawn in black pastel on white paper. The dynamic pastel strokes invite the viewer to look closer to recognise the animal, capturing the daylight on its fur. Bats often remain unseen during daytime hours, only active in the darkness; fleeting shadows in many parts of the world. The artwork captures a bat roosting visibly during the day, reminding us of their beauty.

Medium: Pan pastel on paper
Category: Wings

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Isabella Mandl is a conservation biologist working towards protecting some of the world’s most overlooked creatures: bats. Her work has brought her to many remote and natural places, but also made her aware how much space humans share with bats in their everyday lives. In her artistic expression she aims to capture the diversity and beauty of these animals for the public.
