ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This oil painting on marine board of a great black-backed gull was inspired by a photograph taken on an afternoon walk around the Tresco coastline on the Isles of Scilly. Watching the gulls soaring around the edges of the tide, Cate came to appreciate how imposing they were, a wingspan of around 150cm and a length of up to 78cm. She researched and found they were on the conservation red list which inspired her further to get her easel ready!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Combining her passion for wildlife with her love of painting, Cate Wetherall is a wildlife portrait artist who works with oils and pastels to capture the character and untamed nature of her subjects. Every painting needs to tell a story so research is essential to raise an emotional response from the observer. She tries to use her own photographic references where possible and is always ‘camera ready’ to take that special shot!
