The leafy seadragon belongs to the family Sygnathidae and is found surrounded in kelp regions of southern and south-western Australia. As the Emblem of South Australia and their very charismatic and almost otherworldly appearance they have become a flagship species for conservation of marine habitats and their inhabitants along their range of distribution. Threatened especially by industrial runoff and habitat loss, but also the harvesting for the aquarium trade and alternative medicine.
Like Seahorses, in this species the male breeds the eggs, which are deposited by his tail by the female using an “oviduct” where they are oxygenated by the male’s brood pouch. After about 9 weeks they are ready to hatch and emerge fully formed, although supplied with a little yolk sac to aid them in their first days, although many begin feeding on plankton very quickly independently.
