ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Curious” is a tiny tree monkey with a gaze in his eyes that captures his intense curiosity with the object he is focused on. Making his eyes reflect the light like glass is important to capture the feeling he is having; showing the textures of the soft skin on his nose, his delicate fur, and the back-lit light that defines his head all contribute to this personification of curiosity.

Scratchboard combines drawing and engraving techniques, with each mark created by a scalpel removing ink rather than adding it. The medium is renowned for its precision, dramatic contrast, and ability to capture intricate detail.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Steve Hammond is an award-winning scratchboard artist known for his highly detailed portraits and wildlife subjects. Working with a scalpel on clay-coated board, he uses thousands of meticulously placed marks to create images that challenge viewers. His work has received international recognition and has been exhibited in juried exhibitions in the United States and beyond. Hammond is a signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists and continues to explore this distinctive black-and-white medium.
