In this artwork, made entirely with stitch, I depict a young lion cub with its paw resting on a tree, gently engaging with its environment in a moment of quiet curiosity and discovery. The scene captures more than just a tender wildlife moment—it reflects the essence of growth, exploration, and resilience.

Inspired by the theme Green and Growing, I chose the lion, one of the many remarkable species supported by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. After a gestation of just 2.5 months, lion cubs are born altricial—utterly helpless, blind, and fully dependent on their mother. Unlike their prey species, which must often stand and flee within hours of birth, lion cubs develop slowly, nurtured by the protection of their pride. They remain with their mother for up to two and a half years, a period that allows them to explore, learn, and mature at their own pace.

This slower rhythm of development is both poignant and powerful and a privilege for most predator species. It reminds us that survival in nature isn’t just about survival—it can also be about support, connection, and the freedom to grow into strength.

Thanks to Sophie, 50% of the net proceeds from the sale of this artwork will support the charitable work of DSWF and our ground-based conservation partners across Africa and Asia.
