The tusk and trunk of an African elephant dissolve into flowing gold, symbolising the paradox of ivory’s perceived value. Through this alchemical transformation, the work contrasts material wealth with the immeasurable worth of an endangered living animal.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Melanie Bird is a South African wildlife artist whose deep connection to nature was shaped by childhood adventures in the Kruger National Park, the Vaal River, and throughout the Garden Route. Holding a degree in zoology, she later pursued a career in software development before discovering her true creative calling in coloured pencil wildlife realism. Through her detailed artworks, Melanie celebrates the beauty of the natural world, transforming treasured wildlife memories into timeless pieces that can be cherished for generations.
