ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This portrayal of a stag beetle confronts the tragic absurdity of habitat destruction. The loss of ancient deadwood—vital for its long development—transforms this magnificent insect into its own ‘memento mori’. Through the use of chiaroscuro, the beetle emerges from the shadows, highlighting a fragile, transient existence. Stripped of its surroundings and bathed in dramatic lighting, the beetle’s plight is intensified, emphasising the emotional impact of a species whose very foundation is quietly fading away.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Simone Hofmann is a German artist who is dedicated to portraying the quiet beauty of the natural world. Having initially studied physics, she drew on her family’s rich artistic heritage to develop her own visual language. Her scientific background informs her work profoundly—she employs chiaroscuro to draw her subjects out of the darkness, isolating them through a dramatic play of light and shadow. While her focus remains on birds, Simone celebrates the unexpected details of all wildlife.
