ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Forest Bird” was created in response to a residency at VARC (Visual Art in Rural Communities) and uses clay dug from a pine forest in Northumberland. The artist imagines the vessel remembering the land it came from and the shells, the animals, the plants that shared the forest floor.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Maura Hawkes’ art practice uses natural materials as a way of exploring personal relationships with the Earth. Last year, Maura exhibited a series of woodblock prints and collages at Northern Print, Newcastle in an exhibition titled “On Dreaming”. The series used plant-based pigments such as indigo, weld, and achiote to reflect on her time spent in the rainforests of Central America.
