African Jacana

ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Created for the recently published “Bird, Nest & Egg,” co-authored with his father, this watercolour explores the African jacana’s unusual reversed breeding roles. The male carries his chicks beneath his wings and takes full responsibility for nesting, incubation and rearing. Females, which share the same plumage but are considerably larger, mate with several males and defend extensive territories. The species’ elongated toes distribute its weight across floating vegetation, an adaptation that enables it to move with ease through freshwater wetlands.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joris De Raedt is a scientific illustrator and wildlife artist whose work bridges art and biology. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, he combines scientific accuracy with the spontaneity of field observation. Working in watercolour, he spends hours outdoors observing and sketching birds to capture their posture, character and behaviour. His work has appeared in books, magazines, on postage stamps, and in publications for conservation organisations including WWF. He has exhibited internationally and is a member of the SWLA.
