ABOUT THE ARTWORK
An orangutan clings to a tree, rendered entirely from collaged images of deforestation; cross-sections of felled timber, cleared forest, jagged fragments of chainsaw-cut wood. The animal is literally constructed from the destruction threatening its existence, set against a lushly painted rainforest background, intact and abundant by contrast. Its expression is contemplative, its gaze directed outward, implicating the viewer in the suggested crime.

Chris Swain is a South Yorkshire-based painter and mixed media artist with over twenty years of practice. His work explores humanity’s relationship with the natural world, using collaged found imagery and a variety of painting techniques to construct animal subjects whose surfaces tell a second story—inviting viewers in with bold, graphic beauty before confronting them with uncomfortable truths.
