ABOUT THE ARTWORK The southern ground hornbill is the largest species of hornbill: Jet-black feathers with white wing tips, a formidable beak, distinctive red wattle and the most fabulous eyelashes. Listed as vulnerable, hornbills are greatly impacted by human activity and extreme weather patterns. Hornbills are monogamous, breeding once every three years. Despite laying up to three eggs, only one will be reared to maturity, so reproduction rates are low and slow. Offspring often stay around for years to help rear future broods.
