A superb image of a mother polar bear and her cubs silhouetted on a snowy peak. As quoted by Andy “The middle of March; 45 degrees below zero; 29 days of tracking at 10 hours a day; 7 hours from the nearest settlement; 3 hours by snowmobile from our primitive cabin; 3 frost-nipped fingers (despite all the gear); 15 minutes of battery life;… 1 priceless moment….this is the world of high arctic winter photography. On a commission from the BBC to photograph newborn polar bear cubs for the first time in off Baffin Island, Canada, this perfect family atop an iceberg proved more than ample reward for all the hardships and provided me with a very special, once-in-a-lifetime shot. Standing on the sea ice, just 40 metres away, I could not even feel the camera in the extreme cold, but as I peered through a rapidly freezing viewfinder, I knew that this was a moment that had to be recorded for posterity.”
