We know that good role models in conservation can encourage young people to join the industry, but it’s not enough.

Unless you can see a clear path from school to a job, working with endangered animals and habitats feels like an impossible dream. We also know that those from lower incomes and minorities are poorly represented in the conservation industry.

These pages will give young people some practical steps they can take to increase their chances suggested by people that have already made it. Over the months, we will talk to a range of people in the UK and abroad about how they got their break into conservation, the skills they use to work in their job roles and what made them standout in a competitive job market.

The first in our series of conversations with conservationists is with employees from the IUCN. See further details and our live talk with them below.

What is the IUCN?

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a global authority dedicated to promoting sustainable development and fostering a world where conservation and nature are central to all decisions.

IUCN operates as a network of knowledge and resources, assessing the state of the natural world and identifying the actions required to protect its future.

What did you talk about with the IUCN?

We spoke with three key employees from the IUCN to learn about their journey’s building successful careers in conservation. They share their personal stories, and top tips for breaking into the field of conservation.

More talks will be published here soon. In the meantime why not sign up to our newsletter to stay in the loop with the latest DSWF conservation stories.
