October. An early start. The elephant may be crossing the Luangwa River, Zambia at first light so I need to be in position early and wait patiently. Just before dawn I can hear the elephant congregating on the far bank, lady luck is with me. The sun comes over the horizon and the scene is becoming illuminated, it is clear that this will be an exceptional morning. Eventually almost 150 elephants of all sizes will make the crossing today and the first are already negotiating the steep and somewhat treacherous riverbank. Despite their bulk their agility never ceases to amaze me. The river is shallow in October as it is towards the end of the dry season, and therefore the crossing itself is generally without incident. As they complete the crossing the sand bathing begins. Young and old alike wallow in the dust and use their trunks to spray sand all over their bodies helping to protect them from UV rays and to repel insects. It was a morning to remember.
