Educating a New Generation of Conservationists Through Art Education June 8, 2021 Art transcends boundaries and brings people from all walks of life together. For over 36 years, DSWF has used the power of art to raise vital funds and awareness for wildlife across the globe. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, our ground-based conservation partners at Phoenix Fund in the Russian Far East held a children’s art competition to celebrate the natural world and help raise awareness about the importance of tiger and leopard conservation. This art contest is a fun way for children to learn about protecting tigers, leopards, and the environment and come up with creative ways to share this knowledge with others! This year, 1,608 children submitted their artwork. The entries were submitted on two themes: ‘The Amur Leopard and The Year of the Tiger’. Sergei Bereznuk, Director of the Phoenix Fund noted that “the idea of this art competition is to inspire the next generation to be more mindful of how we take care of the wild big cats and the earth as a whole. The Phoenix Fund wants to get junior artists thinking about what the future of tigers and leopards might look like”, Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of entries has decreased slightly from last year. However, the impact of such initiatives in Russia is clear. Over the last year, not a single tiger poaching incident has occurred in the 21,290km2 of tiger habitat that the Phoneix Fund operate in.
