At the end of the era of steam, David took many photos as well as painting many sketches. This is one of his paintings that remained in his attic for many years and is the first time of going on sale. In this sketch, Bere Alston had just come in for an immediate overhaul. David quotes: ‘I overheard one of the fitters saying – Don’t do a decent job mate, she’ll be scrapped anyway – What a shock to their morale after years of taking pride in their work’.
