About the piece:
Born and raised in Kenya, Yael had the privilege to be surrounded by a rich and natural environment. A love of art is heavily influenced by this and the desire to conserve it is a leading force. In July 2020, the MV Wakashio ship crashed into a 1000+ year-old fragile coral reef in southern Mauritius with the largest brain coral in the Indian Ocean. In a matter of seconds, the whole ecosystem was damaged. The intention behind ‘Whale Sharks in the Mauritius Oil Spill’ is to present the pristine turquoise waters with the devastating contrast of the toxic oil, intertwined with the marine life that suffer the consequences of human mistake.
