Une Vie (The Four Ages of a Chimpanzee)
About the piece:
‘Une Vie’ (a life) illustrates the four important ages in the life of a chimpanzee through portraits: from birth, to adolescence, to adulthood, to old age. The portraits represent the character of the animal at each of its ages. The baby discovers the world, the teenager is fooling around, the adult is at the age of reason and reflects on his future and finally the old man wonders what is happening to him. The works are made on two wooden panels which are painted on both sides. These panels are rotatable and turn on themselves with the help of a small handwheel and magnets (to stabilize the paintings); Thus, each portrait can look and respond to each other in order to create different stories.
