The Sea Wolves

The Sea Wolves

About the piece:
Derek’s work often involves collaborative projects and investigates links between mankind, wildlife, and the environment. ‘The Sea Wolves’ are painted from sketches of orcas off the coast of Skye in Scotland, looking across to the islands of Canna, Eigg and Rum. The resident population in these waters has become extremely endangered, with just two individuals remaining. However the number of transient pods has increased, now being seen regularly. The population changes depict our failures and successes in conserving marine ecosystems, and as top predators in the food chain the orcas are a sensitive weathervane that allows us to see how our seas are changing.
