Survival of the Fittest

Survival of the Fittest
Amy Stauffer
Highly Commended
About the piece:
Amy Stauffer has had a fascination with both the arts and wildlife from a very young age. This fascination has manifested itself as a love for the biological and natural sciences and art in its myriad form. Fusing these loves together has created a style that is both emotive and exacting, and Amy often chooses to portray species with conservation concerns; those on the precipice of extinction. By doing this she hopes the viewers see the creatures they are witnessing as individuals, understanding the importance of protecting their lives. ‘Survival of the Fittest’ is an extremely detailed scratchboard portrayal of two necking giraffes, a technique which is uniquely challenging and appeals to an artist who loves details. It creates a visually striking artwork, which is clearly shown in the depiction of these creatures.
