About the piece:
‘Still Here’ is a drawing of the often-over-looked Australian Water Dragon. Whilst visiting Sydney, British artist Laura Pearse would sit watching these lively and yet oh-so-still reptiles. Laura was fascinated by their witty behaviours and their incredible scale formations and loved that for such energetic creatures they also mimic statues to perfection. It was in this stillness that Laura was able to sketch and study the intricate details of their scales – and the overwhelming beauty of how they have evolved to facilitate movement – Laura wanted to capture this form and silent behaviour in pencil to give it its well-deserved impact.
