About the piece:
Frederique is a self-taught and full-time coloured pencil artist, a medium that she discovered by chance and has now become her passion. She specialises in photo realism, with an emphasis on fine detail and creating lifelike portraits. She decided to depict the okapi in ‘Shyness’ for its very unusual markings and beautiful coat. Finding out more about the okapi she realised it was a very shy animal, so the fact that it is looking back at us as if saying “not sure” is quite endearing. It is not a very well-known animal and is endangered, so she hopes that in a small way this drawing could help raise its profile.
