About the piece:
Eilidh is a Scottish artist specialising in animal portraiture. ‘Hang in There’ depicts a greyscale portrait of an inverted fruit bat, produced on PastelMat paper. She used grey and white soft pastel to illuminate the highlights in the folded wings and charcoal to capture the darkness in this piece. Contrary to popular belief, fruit bats have clear vision, and therefore Eilidh wanted to spotlight the bat’s dark, gleaming eyes to emphasise this fact. She opted for a greyscale effect to reflect the bats nocturnal patterns, as these animals often hunt by night.
