About the piece:
More than a decade spent living in the bush in Zambia and subsequently Tanzania has given Julia Cassels a deep and sympathetic understanding of her subjects and imbues her paintings with an intensity that can only exist as a result of such prolonged experience. As a specialist in both ink and watercolour, Julia’s technical capabilities allow her to treat these traditional mediums with a contemporary twist. With her lightness of touch and by keeping her brush dancing Julia maintains the characteristic flowing style that is so essential to her work. In the past, Julia has illustrated for Penguin, writing a watercolour book on how to capture movement, and contributed to many others. Now back in England, Julia runs courses and workshops from her Hampshire studio, as well as leading painting holidays in England, other European countries, and Zambia. In this artwork, she wanted to capture the serenity of the scene with the gentle movement of the flamingos, using the luminosity that only watercolour can inspire The pops of colour help to emphasis the beauty of their plumage together with their graceful frailty.
