About the piece:
Afzal’s works are based on the idea of symbiotic and parasitic relationships between organic and inorganic, tangible and spiritual things. By observing nature, he imitates such occurrences and tries to bridge these contradicting ideas. Bike-handle Sling Jaw Wrasse is part of an ongoing series called ‘Ocean Junk’, which aims to create awareness of ocean pollution and the human impact on the reefs. His inspiration for this piece came from seeing the unbelievable amounts of rubbish collected in a reef clean-up in the Maldives and he wanted to depict in this artwork his concern for the future of the marine ecosystem.
