About the piece:
“Beneath the Waves has been created using recycled surf magazines, with hundreds of cuttings of eco-paper pieced together to produce the textured and life-like humpback whale and its calf, while beautiful deep blue inks have been layered over the canvas to create the ocean backdrop. As a mother I wanted to illustrate the strength of the maternal role and how it applies to all species. The oceans are being obliterated by humans and this whale will have to adapt and overcome many additional obstacles raising her calf because of our actions. These majestic creatures deserve to live freely in their habitat, we have no right to sabotage that.” Sarah was born in London before moving to Cornwall where she found a passion for the outdoors and became inspired by the beautiful Cornish scenery surrounding her, using art as an outlet for her vision. In 2011 Sarah graduated from Falmouth University with a BA(Hons) Illustration degree and it was here she developed her signature collage style, layering magazine cuttings and paper to create strikingly intricate and textured artwork. Since settling in North Devon and opening Jackson and Young with co-founder Corinne in 2017, Sarah is often crafting visual thrills via canvas in the studio, using the ever-changing North Devon landscape and bountiful wildlife around her as inspiration.
