About the piece:
Although zebra are almost exclusively grazers, during times of serious drought they will browse on bushes or trees to sustain themselves. Namibia has been through a cycle of drought for a number of years and this young foal was obviously inexperienced as the artist watched him nibbling the bark of a dead acacia tree not realising there was no nutritional value whatsoever! Interesting behaviour to witness and he will learn from experience in the years to come what is edible and what should be avoided.
