Icebergs are a powerful symbol of the power and fragility of the natural world. In this painting a rainbow arcs over a monumental iceberg floating serenely in a stormy sea. With the rapid heating of the Arctic, more precipitation is falling as rain and rainbows are becoming a more frequent sight.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

For over three decades the painter Nicholas Jones has sought to evoke the fragility and transient beauty of the natural world. Time spent immersed in the vast space and numinous light of the Arctic in 2018 affected the artist profoundly. The remarkable body of paintings that flowed from it offer the viewer a rare but tangible point of connection with the fleeting beauty of a rapidly changing Polar landscape.

In 2022 he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society’s Cherry Kearton Medal for his Arctic paintings, and ‘his ability to capture the uncapturable: the ever-changing play of light on landscape’.
