‘The Collector’ was inspired by the book ‘The Emperor of All Maladies’ which explored the history of cancer. The crab is positioned on a stark black background, a specimen of curiosity and complexity, a symbol of death, a reminder that we are mortal, and nature is forever.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Pieter Henning is a contemporary artist who lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with distinction from Tshwane University of Technology in 2004, majoring in sculpture and printmaking. Pieter would become a successful furniture designer, exhibiting at major art and design fairs and exhibitions worldwide, including Art Basel and Christie’s London. He has since returned to visual and conceptual art, utilising various mediums and practices including drawing, painting, and moving images. His work was recently included in a group exhibition at the Zeitz MOCAA – Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.
