In the golden early morning light, with mist rising from the Luangwa River, the elephant herd slowly and gently make their way across. Meandering from shallow sandbanks, zig zagging across the river, the older matriarchs shepherd their young. In her painting the artist Julia Cassels has tried to portray the calm serenity of this scenario in the morning light.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Julia Cassels, an award-winning wildlife artist, is never more at home than painting ‘plein air’ in the African bush. With deft strokes, she captures the spirit of the moment. Whether in Africa, Spain, or England, she infuses her paintings with the raw energy of the moment. Sketchbooks brim with swift fluid lines of movement, which evolve into vibrant watercolours or rich oils. Now living in the UK, Julia exhibits widely, promotes wildlife conservation and her work is found in collections worldwide. She runs art workshops, leads painting holidays, has written her own painting book and contributed to several more. Julia will hold her 6th Solo Show in November 2025.
