About the piece:
Jojo Blacksmith is an artist and tutor living in Cornwall, UK. She studied Fine Art at Ravensbourne College, Kent and Cumbria College and teaching at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She has taught Secondary Art & Design and Photography in London and Cornwall and continues to teach art in the community – running art.
The painting is of the lifeforms found on rock surfaces at low tide at Polly Joke Beach, on the North Cornwall coast, South West England, and close to where the artist lives. The lifeforms featured are barnacles, limpets, beadlet anemones and the orange sponge hymeniacidon perlevis. She is particularly interested in the complexities of colour, texture and pattern found in the natural world of her local environment. She uses photography to record and frame subjects within abstract compositions, then translating the photographs into paint, using a range of techniques in each painting, building up the surface to create rich and detailed images.
