About The Piece
Duvacel’s Gecko (Hoplodactylus duvaucelii) is a small, highly detailed bronze miniature. This enigmatic and threatened New Zealand species is shown curled dynamically around a stone, displaying the toe-pads and large, unblinking eyes that are the characteristic traits of a gecko. It was made using the lost wax casting method and during the hand-carving process particular attention was paid to the detailing of the skin texture, giving the piece a dense, tactile quality. The piece is freestanding and carries the artist signature on the underside of the base. Hester is a biology graduate with a particular interest in threatened species. She aims, in her miniatures, to accurately capture the features and attitude of a particular species while creating a pleasing and tactile piece of sculpture.
